On her bike for CWB
CWB volunteer Kristy Shaw has set herself a steep challenge in order to raise funds for her trip to Uganda in Spring 2013. On Saturday 13th October she will cycle 100 miles from Oxford to London with her extremely supportive friends Tim, Vicky, Sarah, Dewayne and Jimmy.
The 100 mile route will follow the Thames Valley cycle route from Peartree, north Oxford, to Richmond Park in London. Kristy explained how the challenge came about. “I am very excited to be raising money for a good cause and have chosen a cycling challenge as it is a completely new experience for me, having only purchased a bike less than a year ago. I used to ride when I was a child but have never competed in a big organised cycle or any sort of marathon. Instead of joining a current event, I decided to set up my own and get a small group of friends to help me along the way.”
Starting at sunrise the group will head towards Oxford town centre for a quick breakfast then continue through Abingdon, Wallingford and Reading before stopping at Henley-on-Thames for lunch. After very carb-heavy lunch they will head to Marlow, then on to Slough, across the M25 and into Kingston and finish up at Richmond Park by 18:30. With an extra 5 mile cycle back home the 100 miles will be complete.
Kristy is both nervous and excited about the task. “Training hasn’t been easy, especially as I’m still recovering from shoulder surgery (cricket injury!) and I’m definitely finding this a huge challenge. No doubt it will probably be much harder than it sounds on my old-school retro bike, complete with a basket and only 3 gears! At least knowing that it’s all in aid of a great charity will hopefully keep us going through the blisters, muscle aches and the very sore ‘saddle bottom’!”
CWB Charity Executive Hannah Weaver commented “We are always amazed at the commitment of our volunteers to raise funds for the projects. Kristy’s efforts will ensure that the development of Cricket in Uganda and the fight against HIV/Aids can continue with the help of CWB. All at CWB wish Kristy every success”
