The Next Generation of Volunteers
Once again this year saw CWB hold two recruitment days in Birmingham and London.
Saturday 31st March saw us return to St Philips Chambers Birmingham. Once again we are indebted to St Philips for the Pro Bono use of facilities, refreshments and delicious shortbread biscuits.
Saturday 14th April saw a change of venue for the London leg of the CWB volunteer recruitment as we regretfully (entirely due to costs) moved away from the Oval which had hosted our recruitment days for the last 5 years and took the opportunity to use (free of charge) the BBC World Service's home for the last 70 years at Bush House (just off the Strand). An impressive building which when it was completed in 1923, was the most expensive building in the world. It may be looking a little tired, but it still felt good to be holding the assessments in the same building as all of the BBC's African services.
As always the standard of volunteers continued to impress us all and their enthusiasm was infectious. Julie arrived a full hour ahead of her session and happily made tea for everyone while she waited, Samuel thought he had won the longest distance travelled (Bath), but then got trumped by Tia, who made her way down from Manchester. Whilst in Birmingham Grant's trip from Dorset set the bar very high!! We seemed to attract such a range of very talented individuals, keen, creative and generally bloody nice people. Consistently all the assessors commented on what a great team they would make, how much fun it would be to go on a project with them, just inspires you to want to get back out to Africa.
We still have a few interviews to complete and will be getting back to all prospective volunteers very shortly. If you missed the opportunity to apply for our projects in the autumn, do not worry, we are already looking for volunteers of Spring 2013. So do not hesitate to get in touch, these guys did and can't wait to get out to Africa.
