Scotts XI Arctic Challenge
Games of cricket are not too common in Oslo, Norway... even less so in the middle of an icy winter where temperatures have regularly been below -10 degrees. Such trivial matters do not perturb the Captain Scott's XI cricket team however. The world famous team (thanks to being the subject of classic books such as "Penguins Stopped Play") are about to make a trip to the Norwegian capital to take part in an "Arctic Challenge", which includes a rather unique game of ice cricket. Given the match ably demonstrates the concept of "Cricket Without Boundaries", the team were inspired to raise money for the charity as part of the event.
While CWB will be a beneficiary of the efforts of the intrepid squad, the event itself is being held to celebrate the 100 year anniversary of the race to the South Pole by the legendary British explorer Robert F. Scott and his Norwegian challenger, Roald Amundsen. While the British group were unsuccessful on that occasion, the Scott's XI is hoping that with bats and balls involved, they will be slightly more equipped than their Norwegian opponents to triumph this time around. The Scott's team will also be tested by a series of other challenges including a dog sled race (in honour of Amundsen's cunning "ball tampering" like tactics (by using dogs instead of ponies) in 1912) and a ski race.
Paul Daniels from the Captain Scott's XI, who is also a former CWB project volunteer, was thrilled to be a part of the project and delighted to be able to help CWB noting that "Knowing we've contributed to the CWB cause will hopefully give me a warm feeling inside when standing down at fine leg for 15 consecutive overs, suffering from mild hypothermia as a result of exposure to the freezing conditions in Oslo".
CWB Head of Fundraising and Corporate Partnerships Andrew Ryan praised the efforts of the Scott's XI saying "The Captain Scott's XI approach to the game is very similar to CWB's - it is all about inclusiveness and enjoyment, not to mention having an irrational desire to play on some rather unforgiving surfaces in less than hospitable conditions! CWB is extremely happy to have partnered with the team for this project and we thank them for their wholehearted efforts in raising valuable funds for the charity".
