Cameroon Autumn 2012

9th - 25th November

During the inaugural CWB project to Cameroon, the team spent the first week in the hustle and bustle of Yaoundé, the Capital of Cameroon and the base of the Cameroon Cricket Federation – FECACRICKET. The Cricket Federation have identified Yaoundé as key area of development for them previously and had done some ground work before we arrived which was clear to see by the enthusiasm of the teachers, willing to learn.

Highlights of the first week included a launch of the FECACRICKET and CWB partnership, which featured an exhibition cricket match of eight overs, which Cameroon did win – but in fairness to our team, Cameroon did put out their national side! The launch of the partnership was sealed during an evening reception hosted by the British High Commissioner, Bharat Joshi at his High Commission residence in Yaoundé. We were warmly welcomed by our hosts and other guest including Government Minsters, UNICEF, and the National media. During the first week, Chris Kangis also made his Cameroon TV debut by staring on 'The Monday Night show' - the equivalent of the one show –. The team enjoyed watching Chris and Victor, the president of FECACRICKET being interviewed live by the show's presenter, from the safety of our seats in the studio audience!

The second week saw the group and a team of local FECACRICKET coaches travel to Buea, on the West Coast. A much cooler climate in Buea provided the team with a fantastic opportunity to see another side of this amazing country.

In total 55 local teachers and players were coached to an ICC accreditation and just over 3000 children were coached during the first project!

“The project was an incredible opportunity to work hand in hand with FECACRICKET to champion the growth of cricket, in tandem with using CWB’s unique method of promoting HIV/AIDS awareness messages. The CWB team and FECACRICKET team learnt so much from each other over the 2 weeks, which will be invaluable for the next project.”
